Anytime is a good time for starting a candle making business and you pursue such a venture just to earn a little extra on the side, or take it up full time because there is a lot of potential in this line of business.

However, you would need to research the business well before starting a candle making business and know the exact sales statistics in your neck of the woods and also on the national level as you will then be able to know the level of demand for candles both locally and also nationally, and also can assess the feasibility of your business proving to be a success. Furthermore, before starting a candle making business, you need to assess whether to do business on a local level or on the national level, and whether to also have an online presence in order to further boost sales. However, more important than starting a candle making business is the ability to balance it and thus you must be able to commit your time to this venture full time, and also have the finances to buy the supplies and then set a decent price for the products.

soy candle making kits

Soy Candle Making Kits: Learn How to Make Your Own Soy Candles

There are many advantages to soy candles, such as the fact that they burn smoke and soot free. This is especially important for people with allergies and asthma, because then they can still enjoy the fragrance and beauty of candles but without the adverse reaction.

Of course you can purchase premade soy candles but you can also make them yourself. You can create candles of our own with soy candle making kits. Not only is this fun and enjoyable but also with soy candle making kits you are aware of exactly what is going into each candle and can feel more comfortable burning them.

When you buy soy candle making kits, make sure that you read the list of ingredients. Aromatherapy is an alternative medicine that is gaining respect as its results become more and more apparent.

Aromatherapy uses scented oils to promote healing and prevent disease, which when you think about it is not surprising, because many medicines and other healing substances have their origins in herbs. Using scented oil for soy candle making makes it easy to incorporate these healing essences into your everyday environment.

Scented soy candles aren't just for aromatherapy. They also make great air fresheners for living rooms, bathrooms, or any other room where you need to mask odors.

Essential Oils vs. Fragrance Oils

Deciding what scented oils to use for soy candle making is purely a matter of preference. You may choose to use two kinds of scented oils: essential oils or fragrance oils. Essential oils are derived from natural substances like flowers, herbs, leaves, roots, and barks. Rose, lavender, pine, and cinnamon are examples of essential oils.

The second kind of scented oil for you to use in making soy candles is fragrance oil. Fragrance oil is derived from synthetics. The essential oils of some natural plants, like bananas, cedar, and coffee, don't lend themselves to candle making. These oils have a short shelf life, or their scents are overpowered during the candle making process. Fragrance oils were developed to mimic these natural scents with synthetic substances.

Unless it is extremely important to you to use essential scented oils for soy candle making, you will want to use essential oils and fragrance oils, and blend the two to get the fragrance you want. The best use of fragrance follows the seasons; when making candles for springtime, use pastel colors scented with fragrance oils like forest rain, freesia, and fresh-cut grass. Use cucumber, ocean; and orange blossom scented fragrance oils for summer candles. Coriander and cinnamon essential oils make fabulous fall candles, while pine, peppermint, and coffee are fun fragrances for winter candles.

Adding the Scented Oils to Your Candles

Any fragrance should only be added to wax that has been removed from heat. Remove the boiling water pan from beneath your wax melting pot and make sure no heat is rising from beneath the melting pot. Slowly add the scented oils you desire for your soy candle making process and continue making your soy candles as usual.

quick and easy candle making instructions

Crafts 101: Quick and Easy Votive Candle Making Instructions

Everyone loves the look of candlelight, but decorator candles are expensive. With these quick and easy candle making instructions, you can make your own candles for pennies and spend the money you save on something else.

Nothing sets a mood like candlelight. No romantic dinner is complete without candles – just look around at the tables in a restaurant the next time you go out to eat. In most restaurants, there is a candle on every table. Candles are therapeutic: watching a candle burn eases stress, and burning scented candles is a time-worn method of practicing aromatherapy. With these basic, quick and easy instructions for making candles, you'll soon be burning votive candles that you made yourself.

Supplies You Need

If you're really serious about making your own candles, you should consider getting a candle making starter kit. You can buy one of these kits at any candle making supplier, and they come with everything you need to make your own candles. Kits are available for votive candles, pillar candles, and long taper candles. The kits will include quick and easy candle making instructions with the other candle making supplies.

If you want to assemble your own candle making starter kit, here is what you'll need: A double boiler or electric skillet or some other pan that has a temperature control that you can cook wax in. If you're on a budget, you can get creative and melt wax in a coffee can set inside a pan of water cooking on the stove. If you use this method, you'll need a candy thermometer to heat the wax to the proper temperature. You also need a pan to pour the wax with, a slab of wax, dye (optional), scent (optional), wicks, wick pins, votive molds, and caution labels.

Getting Started

One pound of wax will make eight votive candles. Melt the wax, keeping the temperature at 165 to 185 degrees. If you want a colored or scented candle, add dye or fragrance when the wax has melted completely. Remove the wax from heat.

The next step in these quick and easy candle making instructions is to insert the wick pins into the votive molds, making sure the pins stand straight up. Next, slowly fill each mold to the desired height, being careful not to overfill them. In about an hour, when the candles cool completely, there will be a dip in the base of each candle that you have to refill. Simply reheat the wax and fill the sink holes.

Finishing the Candles

When the second pour has cooled, remove the candles from the votive molds. If the wax sticks, put the mold in the freezer for a few minutes, and it will release easily. Remove the wick pins and insert the wick in the hole left by removing the pin. Press the wick tab onto the bottom of the candle. Apply a votive caution label to the finished candle, and voila! With these instructions for making quick and easy candles, you've made your very own votive candle!

plastic candle making molds

How to Use Plastic Candle Making Molds

There are a few different materials that candle making molds are made from, plastic being one of the most popular. This is because plastic is such a viable and versatile material, one that can flex and fold how you need it. With plastic candle making molds you can create whatever shapes and sizes of candles you want.

Making Candles

Once you have your plastic candle making molds and other necessary supplies, then you can really start having fun and start making candles. The first thing you are going to have to do is spread newspaper around the candle making area so that if you make a mess it will just get on the newspapers which you can throw out.

Then you will need to melt your wax, which typically will be paraffin wax but there are other types you can use as well. Usually to do this you would place a large pot that is about half-filled with water on a burner over low to medium heat and once the wax has melted you can add coloring and fragrance to it as desired.

To make molded candles you will need to have your plastic candle making molds handy, and cut the wick two inches taller than you want the candle to be, to ensure that you will have a length of wick leftover once the candle is finished.

Then all you need to do is to thread the wicks through the hole at the bottom of the plastic candle making molds, and plug the outside of all the holes with putty. Once you have done this you want to place a pencil over the top of the plastic candle making molds and tie the top of the wicks to these, centering the wick. This will help hold the wick up straight while the wax is drying.

Take your time when pouring the wax into the molds, and let cool for at least twelve hours then refrigerate for twelve hours more. After this your candles are ready to be removed and you can decorate them as you please.

Candle making is not only fun and enjoyable but also a great idea for gifts. You can make your own candles and give them out to your family and friends. Just remember not to get frustrated even if your first few candle making experiences do not turn out that well. Patience is a key factor here and remember that the more candles you make the better you are going to be.

mixing paraffin and beeswax to make candles

What You Should Know about Mixing Paraffin and Beeswax to Make Candles

If you've been making candles for a while, or if you're thinking about starting your own candle making business, you've probably wondered about mixing paraffin and beeswax to make candles. After all, beeswax is expensive, and learning to make candles by mixing paraffin and beeswax could allow you to make more candles for the same amount of money.

Differences between Paraffin and Beeswax

Before you even think about mixing paraffin and beeswax to make your candles, you need to know what the differences between the two waxes and what will happen if you combine them.

Beeswax is an animal product: a natural substance harvested from beehives. Bees secrete wax when they store honey in their beehives, and beekeepers collect the beeswax for processing into candle making supplies. Beeswax is more expensive than paraffin, and it makes a very hard candle.

If you have any doubt whether your beeswax candles are made of 100 per cent beeswax, press your thumbnail into the bottom of the candle. The candle should be very hard and should resist any indentation from your thumbnail. Candles made of beeswax burn slowly and evenly and emit a pleasant natural aroma of honey when they burn.

Paraffin is a mineral product: a natural substance harvested from the earth. Paraffin wax is less expensive than beeswax, and it makes softer candles and must be mixed with stearic acid to make it hard enough to make candles.

Formulas for Mixing Paraffin and Beeswax to Make Candles

What formula you use to blend paraffin and beeswax depends on the kind of candle you want to make. With dipped candles, you need to add stearic acid to your wax blend to make the wax set up. Dipped candles are made by dipping a length of wick in hot wax, letting that layer of wax set, dipping the wick again, letting that layer set, and repeating the process until the candle reaches the desired thickness.

Molded candles can be made with a straight 50/50 mix of paraffin and beeswax. Mixing paraffin and beeswax to make molded candles is easy; just add equal amounts of paraffin and beeswax to your double boiler. You can even re-melt old candle stubs if you don't mind a few imperfections in your finished candles. Be sure to mix the waxes thoroughly, and hold the temperature between 165 and 185 degrees. As always, never leave melting wax unattended.

After the wax is completely melted, stir in any desired additives. The addition of paraffin will mute the natural fragrance of the beeswax, so you may want to add fragrance that will enhance the aroma of honey. Select natural plant scents of fruits and flowers that bees pollinate: vanilla, lavender, rose, apple blossom, and cherry. Mixing paraffin and beeswax to make candles can be a fun, rewarding project and an economical way to reuse your old candle stubs.

medieval candle making

The Secrets of Medieval Candle Making

During Medieval times, candle making was an important art. Since electricity had not yet been invented, the only interior light available came from torches, oil lamps, and candles. Cavernous castle rooms were sometimes lit by chandeliers fitted with candles.

Recent times have seen a renewed interest in the Middle Ages and Medieval times. It seems there is a great fascination these days with everything related to knights and their ladies and the renaissance

Candle Making During Medieval Times

Medieval candle making meant dealing with beeswax. Candles made during medieval times were made of beeswax secreted by bees as they built their honeycombs. Previously, candles had been made with animal fat, or tallow. The major disadvantage of using tallow was that it generated a lot of smoke as it burned. You could tell the minute you walked into a room whether the room was lit with tallow candles, because tallow-lit rooms were smoky rooms.

With beeswax candles, rooms could be brightly lit without being filled with smoke. Beeswax candles were a major advancement in interior lighting, and we owe today's beeswax candles to the medieval candle making craftsmen of the Middle Ages.

Make Your Own Candles – Medieval Style

If you want to make candles like the craftsmen who practiced medieval candle making, you'll need beeswax, a length of wool string for a wick, a stick to suspend the wick from, a drop cloth, a knife, a ladle or large spoon, and a cookie sheet.

Work outside if possible, because medieval candle making can make a medieval mess. Cover your work area with a drop cloth and melt the beeswax over a double boiler. Cut the wick to the length of your finished candle plus four inches. Tie the wick to a stick and balance the stick across two chairs or sawhorses so it can hang down into the wax pot.

Place a cookie sheet under the wick to catch wax drips. Using the spoon or ladle, dip the melted beeswax out of the melting pot and pour wax down the sides of the wick. Coat the entire length of the wick with wax. Let the wax cool slightly, and then repeat the process until the candle is the diameter you want.

Manipulate the wax while it's still warm to create a pleasant tapered shape. Be sure the wax is cool enough so you don't burn your hands. After you are happy with the shape of your medieval candle, hang your candle by the wick so the wax can harden. Medieval candle making included a bleaching process where the finished candle was hunt out in the sun where it faded naturally.

marketing a candle making business

Simple Ways to Market a Candle Making Business

Scented candles have never been more popular. Fragrant candlelight is a mainstay of the aromatherapy business; fragrant candlelight relieves stress and promotes a sense of calm. There will always be a market for candles, whether they are handmade or factory made. Opening and marketing a candle making business are excellent ways to capitalize on the candle craze.

Using the Internet to Market a Candle Making Business

If you have a candle making business, then you must have an internet presence. Internet domain names are cheap, and if your business doesn't already have a name, you should consider choosing a business name that is available as a website domain.

Once you have a website, you need to drive traffic to it. Put lots of candle-related content on your site that contain phrases that people search for on the Internet, like candles, votives, history of candle making, etc. Spread the address of your web site around everywhere you go. Put it in your email signature and list it on your business cards. Print it on the labels you use on your candles.

Using Seasonal Marketing for a Candle Making Business

One marketing plan for a candle making business revolves around the holidays in the year. For example, in January, you'll mark down holiday candles and advertise a clearance sale so you can reduce Christmas and New Year overstock. Be sure to display football-themed candles for Superbowl Sunday and heart-shaped candles for Valentines Day. Your clearance customers will want to buy candles for those occasions, too.

Using Email and Direct Mail for Marketing a Candle Making Business

Create an email newsletter that calls out special sales and inventory changes in your business. As February gives way to March, consumers are ready to put away their heavy winter décor and get ready for spring.

Write your newsletter articles about the fresh spring scented candles you'll be selling to bring spring smells of rain and flowers indoors. Leave an email sign-up sheet at your cash register so customers can sign up for mailings. Ask every customer for their name and address so you can develop a direct mail database for your newsletter.

Using Promotions for Marketing a Candle Making Business

Premiums and promotions are an excellent way to market a candle making business. Customers love free gifts, and offering a free candle every month is a great way to get customers inside the store. Create a candle of the month email club and offer one free candle to customers who come to the store during that month.

Using Attractive Displays for Marketing a Candle Making Business

Once you attract customers to your candle making business, be sure to lure them into making a purchase by tempting them with beautiful interior displays that illustrate how great your candles will look in their homes with their décor.

making a unity candle

Making A Unity Candle: Give It A Personal Touch

The use of unity candles in Protestant weddings is a relatively new tradition and its use is open to different interpretations with many variations possible and they can even be especially made to suit the needs of the bridal couple. Unity candles are simple and they are also very symbolic which is ideally suited for use in a simple as well as symbolic act such as the Protestant wedding. There are also several methods involved in making a unity candle, and among them is making one on your own.

Prices Are Thrice As Expensive

There are many good reasons why you would want to opt for making a unity candle on your own and among them is that the price, when making a unity candle on your own is sure to be one third of what will have to pay when buying from a store. The only difference would be that the specialist companies add a few glitzy decorations, while you will use your personal items to give your unity candle a special touch. Also, when you buy your unity candle from a supplier, the product you get will be rather impersonal, and when you can take the tradition and add your own personal touch, it would seem that making a unity candle is a more worthwhile endeavor that is also a good alternative to store bough unity candles.

The most important thing when making a unity candle is to find the proper candle, and in this regard you need to choose a size that is suitable and which will allow you to be more creative and hence lets you give best expression to your candle making skills. All that it requires is to buy a candle to which you need to spray clear acrylic paint or epoxy in a thin layer so that you get a sticky surface that will make a good canvas for your candle making skills.

The next step in making a unity candle is to place pictures, wedding charms and mementos which are reflections of your personal memories, because the idea in making a unity candle is to create something that you can call your own and which is not something impersonal that has been bought from a store.

You can now proceed to paint on the spaces that require filling and a good idea is to use colors that reflect your personalities, and maybe even the wedding theme. Next, you can complete the making a unity candle by applying one more coat of acrylic paint in a thin layer so as to seal everything.

Once you are through with the sealing, you can then add other decorations and use glue to fix things such as ribbons and laces, though remember also that you are free to create any kind of unity candle that suits your fancy the best. That’s all that there really is to making a unity candle.

make your own candles

How Do You Learn to Make Your Own Candles?

Candle making is an exceptionally rewarding hobby and craft. Nowadays, when everybody is looking for an avenue to earn a little extra over their salary, candle making comes as boon. This is because it can be developed as a hobby that gives tremendous satisfaction as well as a craft that can be used for setting up a profitable cottage business.

Where You Get the Know-How to Make Your Own Candles

There are many ways which you could use to learn how to make your own candles both as a hobby and as a side business. The first option is always the Internet where there is a wealth of free information waiting to be discovered. Try patiently to reach as many websites as you can that explain step by step how to make your own candles. If you do your research on the Internet well, you would not need any other input.

Many people however, even today, are not very comfortable with the internet or they do not have an easy access to it. In that case you could choose to attend special classes which teach you within a certain period of time how to make your own candles as a professional. The advantage with this method is that it guides you at every step and hence you are likely to learn very fast and accumulate enough experience while doing so.

There is yet another avenue left open for you, i.e. learn from your close friends in an informal and unstructured way. This is also a very feasible way to learn how to make your own candles; however, this would take a longer time because it would depend upon coordinating time in such a way that both you and your friend have some common free time which you could be used for learning and practicing the candle making.

What Other Ways Are There to Make Your Own Candles?

You could always make your own candles with the help of candle making kits that are available easily in the market. A word of warning though – the kits are very easy to do as they give everything you need as material as well as step by step instructions. This option is good for getting the initial idea about candle making; but not one that you could use regularly as a hobby or for business purposes.

If you are serious about learning candle making, you need to find a way that would teach you the method and at the same time allow you to learn through the trial and error method as this is the only way in which you could understand the process and master it.

kids candle making kit

Make Candles and Memories with Candle Making Kits for Kids

Candle making is a fun craft that you can do with your kids, and they can give the candles they make as gifts for birthdays and holidays. You could shop individually for all the supplies you need to make candles with your kids, but why not purchase a kids' candle making kit instead? Once you understand the different kinds of kids' candle making kits that are available, you can pick out a kit and make candles the next time the kids are stuck inside on a rainy day, weekend, or school holiday.

Gel Candle Craft Kits

Gel candle making kits are perfect for kids because you don't have to melt wax to use them. Melting wax means getting out the double boiler, making sure you have wax blocks on hand, keeping kids away from the stove, being super cautious when you pour the hot wax, and waiting for the wax to cool. Then you have to clean everything up. Don't get me wrong; hard wax candles are beautiful. But there are times when you want to make candles with your kids without all the drama of melting wax.

With gel candles, candle draws fuel from the gel instead of from wax. A gel kids' candle making kit comes with clear glass candle jars to pour the gel into, colored candle gel tubes, and special colored chips or other objects that are suspended in the gel to add color and interest to the candle. You can purchase a gel candle making kit for kids that makes a dozen gel candles for about $30.

Beeswax Candle Making Kits for Kids

Beeswax candle kits are another extremely popular craft for kids to do, again because no heat or melting is required. You get sheets of different colored beeswax in the kit and some wicks in your kids' candle making kit. The idea behind beeswax candles is to roll the wick up inside a sheet of beeswax. No parental supervision is needed until it's time to cut the wick or light the finished candle.

Beeswax is an outstanding wax for making candles. It burns long and has a natural fragrance that doesn't seem to upset allergies. With several different colors of beeswax to work with, kids can create multicolored candles with stripes and solid colored candles with different colored bases.

When you get your beeswax candle making kit, if the wax is too stiff, warm it up to make it easier to work with. Just heat the oven to 200 degrees and then turn the oven off. Put one sheet of beeswax in the warm oven for two minutes and take it out. It will be pliable enough to roll around the wick. A beeswax candle making kit for kids can be purchased for under $20.

instructions to make gel candles

Anyone Can Make Gel Candles Provided They Follow These Simple Instructions To Make Gel Candles

It is easy to love those beautiful candles that are readily available on the market that give off excellent scents when burnt and if these candles make you feel like making them on your own, all that you need to do to further your goals are to learn up on instructions to make gel candles. Usually, these instructions to make gel candles are not all that hard to follow and it would take just a few steps to help you create your own unique gel candles.

About Materials Required

Before proceeding with the steps outlined in instructions to make gel candles, you should know about the materials required, and thus expect that you will need gel, zinc wicks (and not cotton wicks), essential oils to give fragrance, liquid color dyes and embeds (if you want them). You can easily buy these materials from any supplier of candle-making supplies though remember to include essential oils as well as colors because they are essential to proper gel candle making. Also, you will need a container, and preferably one that is made from glass which allows your embeds to be easily seen when they are put inside the container.

As for the actual instructions to make gel candles, you will first of all need to put some hot glue in the bottom of the container and in its center and then stick a wick in it and allow the glue to set. Next, you can cut up the gel into little pieces to facilitate faster melting and when melting, use a stainless steel pot and also keep the heat at medium temperature. You must be very particular about getting the temperature right and nothing other than precisely two hundred degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable, and so, makes sure to use a thermometer to get the temperature right.

Once the gel has reached two hundred degrees Fahrenheit, it should melt and also become more even and just like syrup and then, according to the instructions to make gel candles, you can add some color dye and add it a small amount at a time till the color is right. You may also use embeds by first dipping them in hot gel and then place them in the container in the manner that you want. It is then time for you to pour the gel into the container and remembers also to pull the wick up and to ensure that it is straight use a pencil to roll it on.

Once the candle has cooled, you can cut the wick to size which is all that there is to completing the task of making gel candles. This would give you the option to learn the craft at your own pace very often without spending one single dime for the whole process.

Alternatively, you could enroll into a crash course on candle making and learn not only how to make soy candles, but also all other varieties, such as gel candles, marble candles and so on. This would cost you some money and would need you to attend classes as per the given schedule which might be a little tiring. However, you would have the advantage of learning from professionals and the opportunity of gaining hands-on experience under their supervision.

The Process of Making Soy Candles Is Easy

First of all gather the materials you would need. The supplies you need for making soy candles are soy wax, a container where the soy candles would be poured in, fragrance (the best ratio is 1 ounce of fragrant oil to 16 ounces of soy wax), soy wax dye (choose the most suitable for you – there are blocks of dye, liquid dye and chips of dye) and cotton wicks which are attached to a metal disk to make the fixation easier.

Warm up the soy wax to melt it completely and remove from the fire. This is the time you need to add the fragrance oil and the dye. Be careful that you follow closely the instructions about the mixing of the dye. Put in the wick and then pour slowly the melted soy wax into the jar. In order to fix the wick in the center until the wax solidifies, you need to fix it with the help of a pencil. Wait for the wax to harden before you clip the wick to the required length – and your soy wax candle is ready.

how to make scented candles

How to Make Scented Candles: A Simple Step by Step Guide

Making candles has always been a fun and enjoyable pastime. Candles, particularly scented candles, are incredibly popular and they add a certain warmth and fragrance to any home. They can however be expensive to purchase, which is why you may want to learn how to make your own.

Learning how to make scented candles can be simple, as long as you get the necessary supplies and take the appropriate steps.

Supplies

Of course before you get started learning how to make scented candles you will have to get the necessary supplies. Wax, wicks, fragrances, and dyes are the staples, but there are various other items you may want to supply yourself with as well. You will also need a heat source your oven will work fine for this, as well as a double boiler, thermometer, candle mold, and kitchen skewers.

Process

Now you can really start having fun and making your candles. The first step in the process of learning how to make scented candles is to have all of your equipment ready. You do not want to have to leave the room while making your candles to get something you forget, so check and double check that you have everything you are going to need in arm’s reach.

Now you are going to have to melt the wax. You should never let it boil but rather keep the heat at a lower level and allow the wax to heat up slowly. Once the wax has melted the next step in learning how to make scented candles is to add the dye. The best idea is to just add a bit of dye at a time so that you can ensure you are getting the exact color you want. After all you can always add more if you want but you cannot take dye out once it has been added.

Adding the fragrance is the next step and usually a half teaspoon of scent will work fine, but if you want a stronger smelling candle you may want to add another half teaspoon to the mixture as well.

Now you need to pour the wax into the mold and allow it to cool. You should never touch the sides of your mold and remember to poke at the candle several times, typically at twenty minute intervals. This will help to release any air from the mold and ensure that your candles are solid and strong.

The process of learning how to make scented candles is one that is really quite easy and a lot of fun as well. It is even something that you could do with your kids, as long as you take care when heating the wax.

how to make oil candles

How to Make Oil Candles: A Step by Step Guide

The process of learning how to make oil candles is really quite simple. Learning how to make oil candles will not only be fun and enjoyable for you but also quite useful, as you can make candles and give them out as gifts to your friends and family members. Everyone loves candles, especially oil candles as they are more natural and also they do not drip as regular candles do.

The First Step

When it comes to learning how to make oil candles, the first thing you are going to have to do is gather your ingredients. It will be quite interesting to learn how to make oil candles on your own, especially if you make scented oil candles. This is because there are so many wonderful varieties to choose from and use to create a different atmosphere in your home.

All the ingredients that you will require for this project can be found in any local craft store or market, and the best idea is to collect a variety of wax, wicks, dye, and fragrance oil so that you have a good selection and will not have to worry about running out to the store to get something you have forgotten.

Getting Started

Now that you have the necessary ingredients and are ready to go, you can really get started on learning how to make oil candles. First you want to heat the wax, and remember that you should never boil or use the microwave to heat your wax. Not only will this make the wax turn out undesirable for candle making but as well this can be very dangerous.

Always make a point to use the double boiler procedure as there will be two pots inside this boiler and in one you can heat the wax while in the other you can heat water. Remember that you will also want to have a candle thermometer handy which you can use to keep track of the temperature of the wax as you are melting it.

Once you have melted the wax you want to add the dyes and fragrance as desired. The amount of each that you should add will depend on the quantity of wax you have melted as well as on how colorful and potent you want the candles to be.

Once you have completed this, the last step in learning how to make oil candles is to pour the wax into pre-wicked jars and then let the wax cool. You should give the wax at least twelve hours to cool but a full day is always the best idea.

how to make candles with crayons

Learning How to Make Candles With Crayons

Candle making has always been a fun and enjoyable hobby, and you can even learn how to make candles with crayons. You will have to alter the instructions a bit, but learning how to make candles with crayons can be incredibly advantageous, especially since it tends to be so much cheaper than other methods.

Recipe

If you are interested in learning how to make candles with crayons, you will first want to gather the necessary ingredients. This includes 1 wax carton, 1 pound of paraffin wax, 4 or 5 crayons, two trays of ice cubes, a double boiler, and 1 piece of ordinary white package string.

Instructions

The first step in learning how to make candles with crayons is to trim the top of your carton off so that it what is remaining is about six inches high. Now you want to cut a piece of string six inches long, and the melt the wax over medium heat in the double boiler. Make sure that you do not boil the wax, as this can result in burning or bubbling that will be unfavorable in the end.

It usually takes about fifteen minutes for the wax to melt completely at this heat, and once it is completely melted you want to break the crayons you have chosen into pieces and add them into the wax. This is what will give the candles their color, so make sure you have chosen colors that are pleasing to you. Also remember that if you use different colored crayons they are going to blend together as they melt and create a new color so keep this in mind.

Once the crayons have melted you want to use a pair of tongs and dip the string into the wax. This will ensure that it is coated with the wax since the ice cubes may prevent some sections from being fully coated with the wax. Hold the string in the middle of the carton and fill this with ice cubes, then pour the hot wax over the ice cubes.

Let the wax cool, which will usually take about a half hour, and then let it stand for another hour or two until most of the ice cubes are melted. Then you simply need to finish off the process by pouring off the water, peeling off the carton, and placing the candle in a tray or on a plate as this will help by catching the rest of the water from the ice cubes as they melt.

Learning how to make candles with crayons is not only enjoyable but is also great because you can make them and give them out as gifts to your friends and family.

how to make candles

Learn How To Make Candles For Business Or Pleasure

Five thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptians started making candles to light the night. People can learn how to make their own candles in a variety of venues.

Once individuals learn the basics, they can make candles for their own use, or they might start their own candle business. Individuals can enroll in a course that is held at a nearby location if they are lucky, but there are some great courses available online where people can learn how to make candles. So if your beeswax sheet is ten inches long, your wick has to be at least 11 inches long.

How to Make a Beeswax Candle

Fold one sheet of beeswax in half and cut it along the fold. Lay one of the cut pieces on a clean work surface and place the wick on the edge of the beeswax closest to you. Make sure half an inch of the wick extends past each edge of the beeswax sheet.

Slowly start rolling the edge of the beeswax closest to you over the wick. Press the edge of the beeswax with your fingers to seal the wick into place. The warmth of your body will melt the wax slightly and help seal the seam.

Once the edge is sealed, continue rolling the candle slowly , keeping the beeswax tight and rolling straight. A straight, tight candle will not only look good, but it will burn better than a loosely rolled, uneven candle.

When you are about two inches from the outer edge of the beeswax, make any adjustments you need to make the candle straight. When attaching the edge of the beeswax to the candle you've just rolled, use your body heat again to press the edge of the wax along the entire edge until the length of the edge is adhered to the candle.

Trim the wick flush at one end of the candle to form a base. Trim the wick at the other end to ¼ inch.

Now that you know how to make beeswax candles, you can start to make all your own candles and need never to buy them again.

history of candle making

What Everybody Ought to Know about the History of Candle Making

The history of candle making is a fascinating story. After all, its main characters are light, heat, and fire. Light is a universal element of every story ever told; heat makes any story more intriguing, and fire adds excitement: a risk of disaster underlying simple, powerful beauty.

Who Invented the Candle?

The history of making candles shows that many different countries developed candle making technology independently as a tool for survival, so no single inventor can take credit for inventing the candle.

Early Origins of Candles

The known history of candle making begins around 3,000 years before the birth of Christ, when ancient Egyptians and Cretans made candles from beeswax, a substance secreted by bees as they make the honeycombs where they store honey. Beeswax candles are still popular today, and they are one of the easiest candles for home candle makers and craft enthusiasts to create.

Around the first century, ancient Romans made candle using animal fat known as tallow as fuel and the center of the bulrush – a reed found in wetlands -- as wicks. Animal fat continued to be used for candle making well into the 18th century, with the spermaceti, derived from the blubber of the sperm whale, producing the finest candles known to that point in the history of candle making.

Eventually vegetable oils like colza oil, made from turnips, and rapeseed oil, sometimes called canola oil, replaced spermaceti in the art of candle making because these vegetable oils were cheaper than spermaceti and could be made locally wherever these plants were found.

Along Comes Paraffin

The creation of paraffin in 1830 changed the history of candle making forever. Paraffin is a group of alkane-based chemicals; it was an inexpensive substance extracted from minerals that produced a high-quality, odorless, clean-burning candle. Paraffin has other uses, as electrical insulation, in waxed paper, and for coating cheeses, but its most influential role among these is its starring role in the history of candle making.

Unfortunately for chandlers, the candle was nearly made obsolete by the discovery of kerosene, which made an excellent fuel for lamps. As affordable kerosene lamps took over the indoor lighting market, candles were relegated to the role of decorative items, burned only on special occasions.

New candle fuels used today, like resin and soy oil, will eventually take their place in the history of candle making. The trendy popularity of aromatherapy and the enduring fantasy of a romantic candlelight dinner make candles an important part today's culture.

double boiler pot for candle making

Why You Must Use a Double Boiler Pot for Candle Making

Candle making is one of the most popular crafts around today. People who try their hand at making candles are finding that candle making is fun and easy to do. Some amateur chandlers (that's what candle makers are called) have even opened their own businesses selling their handmade candles.

Maybe you've been making candles that don't require you to melt wax. Gel candles, oil candles, and beeswax candles all use technologies that don't require melted wax. With gel and oil candles, a wick is suspended in fuel – gel or oil – which has been poured into a clear glass container. Often color chips or other colorful items are suspended in the fuel to make the candle more colorful and interesting.

Beeswax candles are simple to make – just roll a sheet of beeswax around a precut wick. Beeswax candles make popular craft projects because children can make them without having to pour hot molten wax into molds. Beeswax is an excellent candle fuel, burning long and evenly, and emitting a pleasant fragrance that releases a touch of honey into the air.

But if you're serious about the craft, you'll want to get a double boiler pot for candle making so you can make a greater variety of candles. Poured candles and dipped candles all require you to melt wax, and the best way to melt wax is using a double boiler pot for candle making.

How to Use Your Double Boiler

Candle makers have been using double boiler pots for candle making for as long as anyone can remember. A double boiler consists of two nested pans that sit one on top of the other. The bottom pan is the boiling pot, and the top pan is the melting pot. Fill the boiling pot with water and wait for it to boil.

Once the water is boiling, place a block of unmelted wax in the melting pot and put the melting pot in place over the boiling pot. As the level of the boiling pot recedes, keep refilling the pot so water continues to boil. The gentle, radiant heat created by the boiling water melts the wax at exactly the right speed and keeps the melted wax from getting too hot.

When using a double boiler pot for candle making, be sure to also use a candy thermometer in your melting pot so you can monitor the temperature of your melted wax. Wax should be held for pouring at a temperature of 165 to 185 degrees.

Always remove the melting pot from the candle making double boiler pot before adding fragrance to your melted wax.

diy candle making

Five Tips for Flawless DIY Candle Making

If you love do-it-yourself projects such as DIY candle making, then you must read these ten tips for great candlemaking for the DIY enthusiast

Tip #1: Use High Quality Wax

Whether you use beeswax, paraffin, or soy oil to make your candles, DIY candle making is hardly worth the trouble unless you use the best quality wax you can afford. So forget about melting down candle stubs, and skip the paraffin in the canning aisle at the grocery store. Go to the craft store to get wax made especially for DIY candle making. If there is no craft store near you, shop online.

Tip #2: Use a Double Boiler for Melting Wax

Nothing melts wax with the gentle, radiant heat it needs like a double boiler. Using a boiling water bath under the melting pot is a time-honored method for DIY candle making because it works so well. Don't try to reinvent the wheel by using the microwave or direct heat methods.

Tip #3: Follow Safety Precautions

Most DIY candle making is done at home, where you can control your own environment. Set up your work area to make it as safe as possible. Children should not be left unsupervised in your work area. Turn pot handles on the stove away from you so they can't snag on your clothing or be pulled off the stove by children.

Never leave melting wax unattended, and never try to put out a wax fire with water. Keep damp towels and pot lids handy to snuff out any wax fires that start. Prevent wax fires by only using a double boiler to melt wax and by holding your melting wax at 165 to 185 degrees.

Tip #4: Start with Simple Candles

With DIY candle making, it's best to take baby steps before you try to run a marathon. If you're a beginner, start out with beeswax candles. With beeswax candles, you roll a sheet of beeswax around a wick, using the body heat generated by your fingers to seal the seams on the candle. No double boilers, boiling water, or melted wax are required.

Beeswax candles are a great craft project to make with your kids at home on weekends or when school is out. Attach contrasting strips of beeswax to your finished candle to form interesting geometric patterns, or roll finished beeswax candles in glitter to add pizzazz.

Tip #5: Have Fun With It!

The best DIY candle making tip of all is to have fun with the process. Experiment with different colors, fragrances, and blends of wax. Try dipped taper candles and molded candles. Use latex molds to make special novelty candles to give as gifts to people you love. With DIY candle making, the only limit is your own imagination.

container candle making kit

Shopping for a Container Candle Making Kit

The process of candle making is really not difficult at all, as long as you follow a few steps and have the necessary supplies. You can either purchase all of the supplies separately or you can buy yourself a container candle making kit. This container candle making kit will include everything you need to make and store your own candles.

This includes a kettle, thermometer, digital scales, wax, wicks, and dyes and fragrances if you want to change the color or smell of your candles.

Before you purchase a container candle making kit you will want to be more informed on what container candles actually are. Essentially they are non-flammable containers that are filled with wax and a wick. There are a few advantages that these container candles have over others, for instance they are sort of like a candle and candle holder in one, in that they do not drip and so you do not have to worry about mess.

Making Container Candles

Once you have a container candle making kit and are ready to go, the first step is to prepare your molten wax mixture. Make sure to never boil the wax, but rather leave it on a cooler setting and allow it to heat slowly. This is important because you do not want the wax to burn, but instead just simmer until it has reached the desired temperature.

Once you have melted the wax you will need to get the mold from your container candle making kit and fill it with the wax. Leave this to cool, making sure that you do not poke or move the mold at all. After about 12 hours the wax should be set and keep in mind that slow cooling generally provides the best results when it comes to container candles so you should never attempt in any way to accelerate the cooling process.

These are not only a lot of fun to make but also can make as great gifts for your family and friends. There are literally hundreds of different dyes and fragrances to choose from so you can make whatever color and scent of candles you like. This means that you have a lot of variety and also that you can personalize different candles to suit different people. Candle making has always been a much loved pastime and is definitely one that everyone should try out at least once.

colonial candle making

Colonial Candle Making Brightened A New World

Colonial candle making was very important to the people who came to the New World. These people left their comfort zones to sail on dangerous seas to a very rough environment. There were no amenities for these people, and electricity would not be invented for many years after these colonists died. People in this new place had learned to make candles in their original homes, and they used their skills to light their new homes, churches and businesses. Thousands of years before, people in ancient lands had made candles for their own benefit. People in Egypt, India, Italy and many other places made candles before the art of Colonial candle making began.

Colonial candle making was important for there was no other light that was available at night. Tallow was the main ingredient in Colonial candle making. Tallow is animal fat that was smelly and unreliable when it burned. There were not many rich people in the Colonies in the early years, but the rich people could afford more efficient and pleasant smelling candles made out of beeswax. The people who came to the Colonies in the early years were adventurous and creative people. They looked to improve the Colonial candle making, and they did.

Colonial Candle Making Improved With The Colonies

When people first arrived in the Colonies, they had very little, and life was difficult. The conditions and the land constantly improved. Colonial candle making improved with the progress in the land. The Colonial candle making eventually used materials to rid the candles of their awful smell. The people boiled berries and added these to the wax made for the candles. Although this procedure was time consuming, it made for better candles. This procedure also required many pounds of berries for a small number of candles. As a result, the candles made this way were very limited.

Whaling became an important industry in some of the Colonies, and the whalers returned from their trips with whale oil that could be made into wax for candles. The candles made with this wax smelled better than the ones made with tallow. These were not perfect, but they were a welcome improvement. The candle makers in the Colonies sometimes used wooden molds to form their products. Other candles were made by repeatedly dipping the wick into the wax. Most people today would never have the patience required to make candles as they were made in Colonial times.

chemical-free soy candle making supplies

Shopping for Chemical-Free Soy Candle Making Supplies

Candle making can be a lot of fun, but if you want to make more natural candles that burn purer and will not affect people with allergies and asthma for example, then you want to get all chemical-free soy candle making supplies.

The Benefits

There are many benefits that can be gained by using chemical-free soy candle making supplies. It is not made from petroleum like regular paraffin wax candles are and so they burn cleaner.

Another benefit to using chemical-free soy candle making supplies and making soy candles is that they last longer. Rather than having a candle that may burn out over a few uses, a soy candle will last months, even years. The wax spills are also easier to clean so you will not have to worry so much about mess. It is very difficult to clean paraffin wax but with soy candles because the ingredients are natural, the wax basically comes right off surfaces when spilled.

Also by using chemical-free soy candle making supplies, if you add scent it will distribute more aroma than other types of wax candles would. This is because the incorporation of soybean oil results in lowering the melting point of the candle. In turn, you have cooler burning candles and faster scent dispersion as well.

Where to Buy

If you are interested in purchasing chemical-free soy candle making supplies, you will usually just need to head out to your local arts and crafts store. They should have an at least remotely decent selection for you to choose from, but if you would like more variety, than you may want to check out one of the many specialty candle making shops around the world.

The Internet will be a great resource to you here, as with the Internet you have the option of browsing through literally hundreds of different companies in a matter of minutes, something that you obviously could not do otherwise. This allows you more selection and therefore better results in terms of what you want to get out of your candle making experience.

Candle making is a great hobby and by using chemical-free soy candle making supplies not only are you going to produce better, safer candles, but save yourself money as well. The benefits of going this route are great indeed and soy candles are definitely gaining in popularity around the world these days.

candle making wax

Why Use Candle Making Wax, When There Are So Many Choices Available

Once upon a time when you said 'candle' you would imagine animal fat. Gradually that image changed to candle making wax that was obtained from paraffin. Today, when you say or think of candles there are many, many options for your choice – such as soy wax, gel, bees wax, marbles candle making wax, and so on.

How Do You Decide Which Option Is the Best for Your Needs?

First of all start by identifying your needs. Do you want candles as emergency light providers when there is a power (electricity) cut? In that case the regular candle making wax would suffice here. Do you want candles that you could gift to formal acquaintances? In this instance you could use gel for making the candles as this would give the best scope to decorate it and make it into an exceptional gift.

The gel candles are extremely beautiful and easy to make. The fact that you could add a few embeds into the container where you pour the gel candle, makes this gift even more special as the embeds could be chosen to give certain messages that symbolize, friendship, respect, love and so on.

The same stores that sell candle making wax usually have stock of gels and the related material needed to make these gifts. You need to take care however, when you choose to make your gel candles that this type requires a lot of practice until the results are perfect. Initially you would be likely to get a lot of bubbles in the gel candle container; another flaw that happens with beginners is that they tend to add too much dye which kills the show of embeds.

If your friend is an avid convert to nature and save your environment movement, you could choose to gift the soy wax candles. This type of candle making wax is not only extremely environment friendly, but also very easy to work with. You could use the ready made soy wax kits or you could it free style, once you have mastered the process,

Be Prepared for Any Eventuality

If you decide to develop candle making as a hobby or craft and use this skill to make gifts for different occasions, you need to put together a decent stock so you would be prepared for any eventuality. Say, you need all of a sudden a gift for your boss' 15th wedding anniversary and you have only a few days in hand – you could immediately go into your 'lab' and fashion some excellent looking aromatic gel candles that could be used in the bedroom or as centerpieces for a romantic dinner.

candle making tips

A Few Useful Candle Making Tips Regarding Wax And Wicks

One of the most important aspects to good candle making is being able to get the wax temperature right so that you can get the best fragrance throw. When looking for candle making tips, you will learn that every wax as well as related instructions changes with regard to the ideal temperature of the wax when it concern adding fragrance oils. Thus, you will find certain instructions that are very clear and unambiguous about what temperature is most suitable, while others will only suggest the best range of temperatures.

Hot Enough To Incorporate Fragrances Completely

What’s more, keeping in mind that the temperature at which wax usually melts is in the range of one hundred twenty degrees to one hundred fifty degrees, you would expect that this is the proper range to add fragrances. However, as you will learn from candle making tips, such is not the case because the wax must be hot enough to allow the fragrances to be completely incorporated and bound to the wax. Rather surprisingly, you will learn that one hundred eighty degrees seems to be the best temperature for the purpose.

Another important candle making tip is learning about how to get the wick right, which is perhaps the trickiest part in making candles since if you choose a wick that is too big, the flame would end up becoming enormous, and if you choose a wick that is too small, the candle won’t melt in the proper manner. Thus, rather than relying on personal notes and your own experience, it would be better to heed candle making tips on the subject, which surprisingly suggest making the candle that in fact does not even have a wick.

Yet another useful candle making tip is learning how to recycle wax scraps because as every candle maker and even those who use candles will have realized, there are many odds and ends as well as candle scraps that are often left over. All you need to do with these waste items is separate the scraps, remove wick tabs, brush the dirt off, melt the scrap and then remove the wicks and also wick tabs. Then, filter out the debris and once you have clean wax left, you can pour it into a tub and use it later.

One final candle making tip that you will find useful is to learn how cooling candles in a water bath will help make your candles look glossier as well as harder.

candle making supplies

Candle Making Supplies Come In Great Variety

Candle making supplies are available from several outlets and in great variety. The big advantage of making your craft store your candle making supplier is that shopping at a craft store is convenient. Craft stores are usually located in specialty malls that have plenty of free parking available, or in urban locations that are easily accessible by public transportation.

The only disadvantage of making your craft store your primary candle making supplier is that craft stores stock supplies for many crafts, not just candle making. Therefore, your craft store will probably stock very basic candle making supplies However, plaster molds and soap making molds can usually be adapted for use as candle molds, and your craft store is likely to have a variety of molds for soaps and plaster casting.

Online Stores

Online candle making suppliers are another excellent resource for crafts lovers who make their own candles. The variety offered online is unmatched by most brick and mortar stores, and you can find every imaginable kind of waxes, coloring agents, fragrances, and other candle making supplies at an online retailer.

Online retailers also sell special starter kits for beginners that make wonderful gifts. These kits contain everything a new candle maker needs to get started making candles, all in one package.

Thrift Stores

You're probably wondering, what thrift store carries candle making supplies? Well, thrift stores can actually be interesting candle making suppliers, because they contain aisle after aisle of unusual containers, all priced so reasonably, you can probably afford to buy several. Look for tumblers to use as pillar candle molds, or vases in unusual shapes. Any heat-resistant glass or plastic container that doesn't have a lip can be used as a candle mold. Avoid using containers with lips as molds, because the candle will never release around the lip.

Candle Stores

Okay, so maybe a candle store isn't exactly a candle making supplier. But sometimes you just don't have time to make your own candles and you need to purchase some candles right away. If there is a candle store at a mall near you, you can purchase pillar candles, ball candles, votives, decorative jar candles, scented tea lights and scores of other candles which you can personalize or decorate yourself. Buy ready-made candles this time around, and save candle making from scratch for a rainy day.

candle making recipes

Candle Making Recipes for Beginners

Are you someone who has always wanted to make your own candles, but you didn't know where to begin? Everyone knows what a pleasant ambience candles create, but candles can be pretty expensive, especially if you're shopping for specialty candles with custom colors, shapes and finishes. If you don’t have money to burn, use these candle making recipes to make your own candles for much less than it costs to buy them.

Balloon Candles

This is one of the easiest candle making recipes around. The only supplies you need to make balloon candles are a balloon, paraffin or candle wax, and a wick.

First, fill the balloon with water. That's right, make a water balloon! Candle making recipes are all about having fun. Secure the top of the balloon. Use a double boiler, an old saucepan or an old electric skillet to melt your wax, being careful to keep the wax between 165 and 185 degrees until it is fully melted. After the wax has melted, let it cool until it is just about to set.

Dip the water balloon in the melted wax, pull it out quickly and let the thin layer of wax on the balloon cool and set. Dip the water balloon in the wax again, and let that layer of wax set. Continue until you have a nice wax shell around the balloon, about 1 cm thick. Use several different colors if desired, alternating colors as you dip.

When you're satisfied with the outside of your shell, pop the balloon and remove it from the center of the candle. Slowly add warm wax to the inside of the shell, rolling the wax around the edges until it covers the interior. When you get to the last pour, place a wick in the center and pour the warm wax around it. Hold the wick in place until the wax cools enough to support it.

Beeswax Candle

The recipe for making candles from beeswax is even easier than the balloon candle recipe. All you need is a pair of scissors, one sheet of beeswax, and one cotton wick.
Fold one sheet of beeswax in half and cut it along the fold. Lay one of the cut pieces out and place the wick on the edge of the beeswax closest to you. Make sure half an inch of the wick extends past each edge of the beeswax sheet.

Slowly roll the edge of the beeswax over the wick. Press the edge of the beeswax with your fingers to seal the wick into place. The warmth of your body will melt the wax slightly and help seal the seam.

Continue rolling the candle slowly , rolling tight and straight. When you get to the end, attach the edge of the beeswax to the candle you've just rolled, again using your body heat again to melt the edge of the beeswax to the candle. Trim the wick flush at one end of the candle to form a base. Trim the wick at the other end to ¼ inch.

With these simple candle making recipes, you can master these basic candles and then go on to learn how to make candles more beautiful than you can imagine.

candle making procedure

Following a Candle Making Procedure

Everyone loves candles. They are beautiful, relaxing, and many give off wonderful scents as well. Of course you can go out and buy premade candles, but have you ever thought of making your own? If the idea of candle making sounds interesting to you, then the first thing you will want to do is read a candle making procedure to give yourself a better idea of what is involved in the process and what ingredients you are going to need.

Ingredients and Equipment

One of the first and most important things noted in any candle making procedure is the list of ingredients and equipment that you are going to need to make the candles. You will need a deep double boiler, wax, a wick, dye if you want to change the color of the candle, and fragrance if you would like it to be scented.

Also for a candle making procedure you will need to have small weights, scissors, an electric hot plate, small dowels, and a drying or cooling rack which will be used when you are cooling the wax.

The Process

The first step in a candle making procedure is to melt the wax. It is important that you stand by the double boiler method rather than using your oven or another heat source, simply as this is the best and safest way to melt the wax. Once the wax has melted you can add dye and fragrance as desired, and allow this to completely melt into the mixture as well.

Now you simply pour the melted wax mixture into the candle making molds and allow this to cool. You should usually give the wax at least twelve hours to cool but a full day is typically the best idea just so you can be completely sure that it has fully set.

This can be the end of the candle making procedure, or you can continue it on by decorating the outsides of your candles. You can use ribbons and bows or glitter, whatever you want. If you are planning to give the candles out as gifts then you may want to take the particular receiver into consideration to determine what type of decorations they would enjoy the most.

You can really get creative here and make beautiful and unique gifts that your friends and family members can treasure for a lifetime. Candle making can be incredibly fun and enjoyable, but it does take a little time and patience. It is important to not get frustrated and to remember that the more you practice the better you are going to be and the better your candles will turn out.

candle making material

Special Gifts Made with Candle Making Material and a Lot of Love

Candles are an excellent choice of gift for any occasion and any person in your life, whether in a formal or informal relationship. There are many types of candles you can make at home with minimum effort, which can not only look great but also be an expression of appreciation and love.

Practice and Raw Material Are the Key to Perfection

Depending upon what candle making material you use, you could make a wide variety of candles, such as tea light candles, aromatic candles, decorative candles, novelty candles, gel candles, luminescent candles, pillar candles, soy candles and so on. The type of candle you choose to make should be decided after you know who the recipient is.

For example, for your boss on his birthday or Boss Day you could offer decorative candles made out of gel with a few embeds that would indicate your respect for him/her. Your mother could have some of the aromatic candles or the tea light candles which would express your love and appreciation for everything she does for you, and so on.

The quality of the candle making material is very important. Hence, before you graduate to making gifts for your friends and relatives, you need to practice with the making of candles and with different candle making material so you would be prepared for any type of eventuality and deviation in the process.

Start with small experiments with the easy types of candle making and keep at it until you can make it almost without thinking. Always ensure that you follow the necessary safety rules when you do so, as candle making has a great potential for bad accidents. Have a fire extinguisher close by (you should know how to use it and it should be in working condition), use a fire retardant apron and eye protection.

Stock Up on the Basic Candle Making Material Needed

If you are planning to make candles and use them as gifts as and when occasions arise, you would need to maintain a good stock of the candle making material you generally need so you would not be faced with any shortage at the nth hour. A good stockpile would ensure that you could have some excellent gift ready in no time whenever you want to make a special impression on somebody dear to you.

Along with the candle making material you would also need some fancy gift wrap or boxes and tissue paper as the packaging of the gift is often as important as the gift itself.

candle making latex molds

Make Novelty Candles with Candle Making Latex Molds

Novelty candles are a lot of fun. They come in an amazing variety of shapes and sizes and are meant more for decoration than for actual burning.

Most novelty candles are made with candle making latex molds. These flexible molds make it possible for a beginning candle maker to make great-looking novelty candles that look like they were professionally made.

The Hard Part: Choosing a Mold

Latex molds for candle making come in such a variety of subjects and sizes, choosing a mold can be the hardest part of the whole candle making process. If you like to change your home's décor with the holidays, you can find candles for virtually every holiday. There are bunny candle making latex molds for Easter candles, pumpkin-shaped molds for Halloween, turkey-shaped molds for Thanksgiving, and Santa Claus molds for Christmas.

If you love animals and want to make animal candles, you can find latex molds for making candles in the shape of bears, elephants, frogs, gorillas, kangaroos, elephants, and zebra. Candle making latex molds are also available in the shape of many breeds of dogs; there are bird molds, cat molds, and even dinosaur molds.

Making Candles with Latex Molds

Once you select your latex mold, the actual candle making is easy. You'll need to melt hard wax like you do for other candles, at 165 to 185 degrees. Set the wick pin in the mold and set the mold in a coffee can filled with sand. Slowly pour the wax into the mold.

Wait patiently for the wax to cool completely. Depending on the size of your candle, this could take several hours or even overnight. After the wax cools completely just roll the flexible latex mold away from the edge of the candle. If the latex resists, lubricate the outside of the mold with vegetable oil, and it will roll smoothly away from the candle.

Pull out the wick pin and thread the wick through the hole. If the bottom of your molded candle is uneven, level the candle by heating the boiler or saucepan you use to melt your wax and carefully placing the candle in it. Move the candle against the hot surface and carefully remove the candle when the bottom is even.

Remember Safety First

Be sure to follow candle making safety precautions any time you are making candles with latex molds. Treat wax like cooking oil and keep track of its temperature while you heat it. Never leave melting wax unattended, and don't pour your leftover hot wax down the sink. If you do have a wax fire, turn off the heat and cover the pan with its lid. Do not pour water on a wax fire.

candle making kits

Make Lovely Gifts with Candle Making Kits

Candle making is a wonderful and very satisfying hobby that anybody can take up anytime. Burning a candle inside a glass candle jar is one of the safest ways to use a candle, since glass is a non-flammable material that can withstand the heat of a candle flame.

Jars for making candles come in a wide variety of shapes and colors; there is surely a style to fit every type of décor. There are contemporary style, country style, and colonial style candle making jars. Let's look at some of the many candle making jars available for you to choose from.

Candle Making Jars for Country Décor

The classic clear glass canning jar is one of the most popular candle making jars used today. Mason jars evoke a rural lifestyle, when mothers and grandmothers preserved the home-grown harvest by home-canning vegetables, jellies, and jams. Mason jars come with lids in gold and silver finishes and are easily decorated with country-checked ribbons and hand-lettered labels.

Candelinas: Jars Especially Made for Candle Making

Unlike Mason jars, which can be used for a variety of purposes, candelinas are jars designed especially for candle making and for no other purpose. Jar candles are so easy to make; all you have to do is mind the wick as you pour the wax, to make sure the wick stays straight.

Candelinas come in an elegant 2 oz. size. They are extremely affordable, whether purchased individually or by the case. All candelinas come as a set complete with jar, flat lid and fitment to make candle burning and candle snuffing safe activities. Glass finishes are frosted, clear, or tinted.

Apothecary Jars for Candle Making

Apothecary jars are another popular tool for candle making. Clear glass jars come with domed lids and flat fitments, so you can include a little keepsake or charm in the lid. What a great gift-giving idea!

Other shapes of clear glass jars for candle making include a fluted clear glass votive jar, and a votive jar shaped like a flower pot. Popular geometrically shaped jars for candle making include square jars, six-sided jars, 12-sided jars, tall tumblers, and squatty tureens.

Frosted Glass Eggs

Frosted glass eggs are a candle jar with a surprise. Until you open the egg, you don't know there's a candle inside! If you hate the look of burned wicks, frosted glass eggs are for you. Simply put the frosted egg lid back on the base to snuff the candle, contain the smoke, and hide the burnt-black wick. Whatever your decorating style, candle making suppliers are sure to offer a candle making jar that will fit in with your household décor.

candle making in colonial times

Candle Making In Colonial Times Involved Use Of Bayberries To Extract The Wax

Candle making in colonial times was something that gave a lot of people work to do, and since that was en era in which there was no electricity to light up the nights, and oil was too expensive to use for the ordinary person, there was no other option than to use candles to illuminate the nights. In those days, candle making in colonial times involved using animal fat while only the rich could afford to pay for and get candles made out of beeswax that had wonderful smells and which also burnt a lot better.

Better Smelling And Cleaner Candles

However, candle making in colonial times really took off when it was discovered that it was possible to make candles that smelt real nice and which burnt very cleanly by using bayberry shrubs instead of the usual animal fat. In fact, it is still the practice to extract wax by boiling bayberries, and it even takes just as long today to do the extraction as was the case during colonial times.

Another notable aspect to candle making in colonial times was that to make candles largely required that they be made from whale oil. Still, people continued to harvest berries from bayberries shrubs because though it took a lot of effort, it was still the cleanest way to make candles at the time. However, it did take as many as eight pounds of berries to extract a single pound of wax, and even the process of preparing the berries for further extraction of pure wax took quite a few days. All this was however necessary as far as candle making in colonial times went because it helped to eliminate the foul smell of animal fat candles and also because burning those candles were a very messy thing as well.

However, the tradition of candle making in colonial times lives on and if you want to try your hand at this form of candle making, all you need is to buy bayberry wax that is easily available in various stores, and though you can now use molds to create different and wonderful candle shapes, the rest of the candle making process is pretty much the same as was in the colonial times. You would also need strands of cotton that will serve as wicks and along with tapers; you can create candles suitable for use in a home. Still, while candle making in colonial times may have seemed to be very rudimentary, it nevertheless required a lot of skill as well as plenty of dedication to make the candles properly.

candle making equipment

Candle Making Equipment Every Crafter Must Have

Have you always wanted to make your own candles, but you were daunted by the idea of buying all the candle making equipment? Well think again, because you probably already have a lot of the equipment you need to start making candles right away. Let's see what equipment for candle making you need to get started.

Before you go out and buy wax, you need to have something to melt the wax in. Whatever you do, don't use the microwave, and don't just plop a block of wax into a saucepan on the stove. If you try it anyway and end up with a wax fire, be sure to keep the lid of the saucepan on hand, because you'll have to put the lid over the saucepan to smother the flames. Never, ever pour water on a wax fire.

You Need Something to Melt Wax In

The best way for a beginner to melt wax is in a double boiler system. A double boiler has two pans that fit on top of each other, the smaller pan on top. The bottom pan is kept full of boiling water, and the boiling water creates a gentle, radiant heat that melts the wax safely without a risk of the wax catching on fire.

You should be able to find an inexpensive double boiler at a discount store for under $25. Once you use the boiler as candle making equipment, do not use it for food preparation. You will also need several other inexpensive items which you may have on hand: a candy thermometer, a kitchen scale, a ladle, and a small pan with a spout for pouring wax into molds. Again, once you use these items as equipment for candle making, they should never be used again to prepare food.

If the idea of melting wax intimidates you, then you should look into making beeswax candles. Beeswax candles are made of a sheet of beeswax rolled by hand around a wick, and they are the easiest candles to make and require no stove, no boiling water, and no melting.

Wax and Wax Additives

You can't make candles without wax, and paraffin is one of the most favorite waxes to use. Buy high quality paraffin from a candle making equipment supplier. You'll be tempted to use the cheap canning wax in the grocery store, but you'll be disappointed if you do. A candle making equipment supplier will also have blocks of dyes, fragrances, and other additives on hand.

Wicks and Molds

Finally, you need a supply of wicks and molds, and any candle making equipment supplier will have a wide variety of both. Wicks are pretty straightforward, but molds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Start with a simple cylindrical pillar and work your way up to the more complicated shapes as you gain more experience working with candle making equipment.

candle making directions

Get Started Candle Making: Candle Making Directions

If you have never tried candle making before, it is definitely an art that you will want to try out. Candle making is fun and enjoyable, and you can make candles to give out as gifts to your friends and family members. Candle making directions are very easy to follow, which is another desirable feature of the hobby.

Even children can follow candle making directions, but if you decide to let your kids take part in this candle making experience make sure that you just let them read the candle making directions and help you with the easy parts, not with any of the dangerous parts of the process, namely the heating of the wax because they could get hurt.

Basic Candle Making Directions

The first step to making a basic candle is to melt your wax. You should always use a double boiler, as although your oven will work fine this is the easier and safer way. Always keep a thermometer nearby which you can use to keep track of the temperature of the wax as you are melting it.

Once the wax is completely melted you want to add the dye if desired and fragrance as well if you like. You should stir and then let the wax dye melt and fragrance sink in for about five minutes. Then stir again until everything is combined together completely.

Now you pour the wax into molds, of which can be whatever you desire. There are many different sizes and shapes of candle making molds to choose from, and you should always let wax cool overnight in order to ensure it has completely cooled and will not ruin when you go to take it out of the mold.

That is all that is necessary in the most basic candle making directions, but of course you can add your own variations into this as well. Candle making has always been one of the most enjoyed hobbies, and is a great way to spend your time. Just remember not to get frustrated if your first few sets of candles do not turn out or burn perfectly, because the more you practice the better you are going to be.

Also remember that there are many candle making classes and courses that you can take if you want to get help here, and they are usually very inexpensive. This is definitely a hobby that can be very benefitting to learn, especially around the holidays when you are looking for great and unique gifts to give out to your loved ones.

candle making course

A Candle Making Course For Business Or Pleasure

Many people who love candles have turned their passion into a business that they could really enjoy, and other people make candles for their own use. Before the electric light, candle making lit the world. If there was light at night, it was because someone had studied the art of candle making. Modern people flip a switch to light a room, but many modern people do not appreciate a lighted room because it is so easy to accomplish. Candle making is for fun and fashion today, but people long ago did not see well at night unless some of their compatriots did some candle making.

There is evidence that Egyptians were proficient in candle making more than five thousand years ago. Their rich history has been preserved to some extent and evidence of their candle making abilities is present in Egyptian historical records. The Chinese also made candles more than two thousand years ago to light their world. The Japanese as well as the Egyptians and the Chinese used wax to make their candles. Other people of early history made candles including the Indians, the Italians and the native people of Alaska. The Irish manufactured candles in Dublin as early as the fifteenth century. Early in history some made candles to keep track of the time.

Candle Making Remains Popular Today

Although candle making is not so important to modern people, it is still a fun pastime and a lucrative business. People do not need candles to light their homes in most places in the modern world, but many love the ambiance that candlelight gives to any room. Some people love to take a leisurely bath in candlelight because they find it extremely relaxing after a stressful day. People light their restaurants and dinner tables with candles because the soft light makes for a better atmosphere than regular electric lights.

The art of candle making has changed with the times and the needs of the population. The candles of ancient times might have provided a special atmosphere, but this was not the purpose of the candles. Modern candle makers use special colors and scents in the wax of their candles. Some use essential oils which have been known to provide a relaxing or healing atmosphere in a room. The art of candle making has progressed, but now modern inventors have made lights that closely resemble candles to avoid some of the dangers from light by candlelight. Although people who make candles do some great business, they are not as important as they were thousands of years ago.

Beeswax Candle Making

Making Votives: Beeswax Candle Making

There are a few different types of candles, beeswax being one of the most popular kinds. Beeswax is actually one of the oldest materials used to make candles and many candle makers still stand by it as being the best. If you are interested in beeswax candle making, there are a few things that are going to be important for you to know.

Supplies

One of the easiest beeswax candle making projects is for beeswax votive candles. For this you will need a plain votive candle, beeswax, a wick, and whichever dyes and fragrances you like. Keep in mind that straight sided candles tend to work best here.

Process

Once you have all your supplies, the first thing you want to do is roll the candle. You can either roll it flush with the top of the candle or you can roll it higher than the top of the candle. Now you will need to cut the beeswax to have it ready for your beeswax candle making.

Whichever height you choose to make the candles, you will need to set the votive candle on the sheet of wax and then mark the height that you want with your knife. Then you want to use a ruler to ensure that you are cutting perfectly straight lines. Remember that you will probably need two lengths of beeswax, so the best idea here is to lay the first one on top of the leftover and cut a second sheet of beeswax, to ensure it is the same size.

The next step is to actually roll the candle, and this is perhaps the most important step in the process of beeswax candle making. You do not want to have a taper on the candle but rather have it even all the way around. This may take a few times but the more you practice the easier you will find it to be. Then you just add on the second sheet to add stability and help give the candle a longer life.

Finishing Touches

Finally you just need to trim off any extra beeswax, and decorate as desired. You may want to wrap a bow around the candle for instance, or glue on some glitter. If you are making the candle as a gift you should personalize it to suit the intended receiver. Making candles can be a lot of fun and is always a great gift idea. Everyone loves candles and beeswax candle making is something that is inexpensive and quick to do.
